Carnival Cruise Line New Mega Ship To Be Named Mardi Gras

Dec 06, 2018

Carnival Cruise Line is honoring the company’s rich history by naming their latest groundbreaking vessel after their first cruise ship Mardi Gras launched in 1972.

The announcement was made at the end of Wednesday’s broadcast of “Wheel of Fortune” using the game show’s signature puzzle board.

Compared to the first Mardi Grass which was a 27,000-ton vessel, the latest Carnival cruise ship will be more than six times the size and largest vessel in the fleet with 180,000-gross-ton 1,130-foot-long with a capacity for 6,500-passengers. Currently under construction at Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the new Carnival Mardi Grass will be delivered in 2020 and homeporting in Port Canaveral. The company says this groundbreaking cruise ship will introduce features and technological innovations that have never been seen before. As part of Carnival’s green-cruising platform, Carnival Mardi Gras will be the first ship based in North America to be powered by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). More details and info about the itineraries will be released in January 2019 when the voyages will open for sale later that month.

“Our first ship Mardi Gras was a historic vessel, introducing a brand new style of cruising to the vacationing public,” said Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. “What better way to pay tribute to our company’s nearly 50-year history of creating wonderful vacation memories than by naming this groundbreaking vessel after our original and beloved Fun Ship.”
