Oct 10, 2016

Red fire alert was sounded at the German Shipyard Meyer Werft on Saturday. The fire broke out in the early morning hours on the Norwegian Cruise Line new build ship Norwegian Joy. The fire started on one of the staterooms balcony on Deck 9, at around 7:50 a.m. The hall was evacuated, and luckily no one was injured. Affected by the fire are several decks of the 326 meter long vessel. 130 firefighters and dozens of rescue workers were deployed to the shipyard. After one hour the emergency services had the fire under control. However, the fire at various points had flared up again, said Papenburgs city fire chief.

Extend of the damage on the cruise ship is not yet known. In the coming days teams will determinate which areas are affected by the fire. Meyer shipyard spokesman said that they need to check whether new cabin walls and ceilings need to be replaced and which cabins must be completely rebuilt. Meyer Werft spokesman said that the works on the Norwegian Joy should continue on Tuesday, but not in the damaged areas.

This is second fire on Norwegian Joy. Ten days ago, another fire broke out, caused by welding in a gas distribution box. It is estimated that there was a loss of around $60 000.
