Due to near-record low prices being paid for lobsters in Maine, a new lobster-promoting campain has been launched by the Maine Lobster Council. A new TV commercial encouraging people to buy more lobster is a part of this new campaign.

In another arm of this new campaign, Rep. Chellie Pingree is making efforts to convince cruise ship companies to purchase more live Maine lobster when they dock in Portland. Dozens of ships are scheduled to visit Portland before the end of the season, and Pingree has contacted the fifteen companies' CEOs asking that they buy more lobster while at the city.

Cruise ships, currently, are actually buying lobster from a groups of businesses in Bar Harbor. The first lobsters will be loaded in Bar Harbor this Friday because of the efforts of the Cruise Maine Coalition working with the local business people and having contacted Holland America Cruise Lines.

Although cruise ships are already a huge customer for Maine Lobster, they mostly buy frozen processed meat and lobster tails. The goal of this campaign is the get the cruise companies to buy more live lobster to help reduce the current flooding of the lobster market.
