Azamara Journey Completes Dry Dock in Greece

Submitted by kgnadmin on

The Azamara Journey has completed an extensive dry dock at the Elefsis shipyard in Greece. As part of the ship’s makeover, a range of key upgrades have been implemented. From enhanced propulsion systems, thrusters, and stabilizers to refreshed interiors and brand-new carpets, the Azamara Journey is all set to welcome guests with improved comfort and smoother sailings. This refurbishment is just part of Azamara's ambitious plan to enhance its entire fleet this year.

Azamara Club Cruises to Drydock Entire Fleet in 2024

Earlier this year Azamara announced plans to dry dock all four of its ships in 2024. This extensive schedule will see the entire fleet receive scheduled repair and maintenance work at shipyards in Greece, France, Holland, and Spain. Azamara’s fleet consists of four sister ships, each weighing in at 30,277 gross tons, built between 1999 and 2001, and known for offering an intimate and immersive cruise experience to guests around the world.

Here’s a breakdown of the dry docking schedule for 2024:

•    Azamara Quest: July 28th to August 10th at Damen Ship Repair in Amsterdam.
•    Azamara Pursuit: August 26th to 31st at CNdM in Marseille.
•    Azamara Journey: September 9th to 13th in Greece (shipyard to be confirmed).
•    Azamara Onward: November 7th to 12th at Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain.

What to Expect from the Refurbishments

During the dry docks, each ship will undergo a comprehensive range of maintenance and upgrades. This includes hull cleaning and painting, underwater inspections, and checks on key systems such as stabilizers, rudders, propellers, and bow thrusters. These crucial updates will ensure that the vessels remain in peak condition and continue to provide smooth, reliable voyages.
In addition to these inspections, some of the ships’ systems that are approaching the end of their operational lifespan will be replaced or upgraded. This includes the installation of new and improved equipment aimed at enhancing both the efficiency of the ships and the experience of guests onboard.

Fuel Efficiency and Eco-Friendly Innovations

A key focus of these refurbishments is optimizing the fuel efficiency of the fleet. To achieve this, Azamara will apply a silicone-based underwater hull coating to all four ships. This advanced coating is designed to reduce drag as the ship moves through the water, resulting in better fuel economy and a more environmentally friendly operation.
Furthermore, all ships will receive upgrades to their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. New, modern chillers will be installed, and air handling control systems will be upgraded to ensure better climate control and guest comfort. The onboard lighting and dimmer systems will also be updated, offering enhanced energy efficiency and an upgraded ambiance in public areas and staterooms.

Unique Operational Focus

Unlike many other cruise lines that are equipping their vessels with shore power connections to reduce emissions while docked, Azamara has chosen a different approach. Given the brand’s unique operational profile, which includes visiting smaller, off-the-beaten-path ports around the world, shore power connections are not part of their current plans. Instead, Azamara is focusing on other ways to improve sustainability and efficiency, ensuring that the fleet is well-equipped for its specialized itineraries.
