In a heartfelt post on social media, Captain Johnny shared his emotions and reflections on the decision to step away from his storied career:

“I have been in the thinking box for the last months, and come to the conclusion that after 50 amazing years working for such a fantastic company, it’s time to start a new career; As of January 26, 2025, I will start...a new 'job'.”

His new "job" will be one of the heart: being a full-time husband, father, and grandfather. Captain Johnny expressed his excitement about dedicating more time to his family, which includes his loving wife Sissel, two children Erlend and Eirin, and four grandchildren with one more on the way in April.

Captain Johnny reminisced about his journey, acknowledging the incredible people who had been part of his life throughout his tenure: “I have met and worked with so...many wonderful people in my career, no one mentioned – no one forgotten. You know who you are. Thank you all for [having] been a part of my life for 50 years.”

As he transitions to a life onshore, Captain Johnny leaves behind countless memories and a profound impact on those he has worked with. Royal Caribbean and the wider cruising community are undoubtedly grateful for his service and will miss his presence on the bridge.
