After more than two decades at sea, Captain Kate McCue, has announced her departure from Celebrity Cruises. Kate McCue made history as the first American woman to command a large cruise ship, shared the emotional news on her social media accounts.
“Today, I say farewell to Celebrity,” McCue wrote. “I've spent the last 22 years on 11 ships in the Royal Caribbean Group, from 2nd Officer to Captain. I have seen some of the most beautiful places, met inspiring and wonderful people, and had opportunities to live my 12-year-old dream out loud!”
Her announcement was accompanied by a video showcasing memories from her time at sea, featuring crew members and colleagues who left a lasting impact on her journey. McCue, known for her engaging presence on social media and her dedication to breaking barriers in the male-dominated maritime industry, has been an inspiration to aspiring female captains around the world.
While McCue did not disclose her next steps, she hinted at future seafaring adventures.
“Are my sailing days over? Absolutely not! I’ve got too much salt in my veins to leave the sea behind,” she said, calling this new phase of her career “the start of the Captain’s Log: New Seasons.”
Following the news, Celebrity Cruises shared a message of gratitude.
“The journey we have shared together has been absolutely amazing,” the cruise line wrote. “You brought passion and heart to everything you did, inspiring so many along the way, and leaving a lasting mark on our industry. We wish you fair winds and following seas, always.”
McCue’s career has been nothing short of remarkable. She first joined Royal Caribbean Group in 2003 and rose through the ranks. In 2015, she become the captain of Celebrity Summit, making history as the first American woman to command a major cruise ship. She later took the helm of Celebrity Edge, where she continued to push boundaries and advocate for diversity in the maritime world.
