Crew Member Arrested in Canada for Possession of Child Pornography

Submitted by kgnadmin on

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested a cruise ship crew member for possession and importation of child pornography in Frobisher Bay, near Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, Canada. The crew member, identified as Akshay Somaroo, a 31-year-old from Mauritius, was detained on September 1.

According to the RCMP, the arrest occurred when officers boarded the cruise ship as part of routine customs inspections, assisting the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

During the inspections, CBSA officers searched Somaroo and found materials that led to his arrest for possession of child pornography. He now faces charges of both possession and importation of child pornography.

The crew member appeared in court before Justice of the Peace Nicol Sikma and remains in custody. He has not entered a plea at this time. Prosecutor Emma Baasch confirmed that Somaroo had been working aboard the World Explorer, an expedition cruise ship with a capacity for 196 guests and 130 crew members.
