Pile Gate

The main entrance to the Old Town is Pile Gate, constructed with Inner and Outer City Gates. Outer City gates with a Renaissance arch in the form of a semi-circular fortress were built in 1537. To this gates, over the City trench, leads a stone bridge with a wooden drawbridge insert that was heaved up in position by means of winch and counterweights.

Stradun (Place)

Once you enter the Old Town main gate Pile, the famed Stradun limestone-paved pedestrian street appears. Here you will find many of the historic buildings and monuments located in the Old Town. Please consider that during the summer season as much as 7 cruise ships and some 10.000 cruise passengers make daily visits to the old town, so it can be quite crowded.

Old City Walls

Dubrovnik’s city walls initially built to defend the Old Town are a great way to see most of the landmarks. The entrance to Dubrovnik city walls is just after you pass the Pile Gate. From the right-hand side, there is an office where you can purchase tickets for the City Walls Tour. The walls are almost 2 kilometers long and it takes 2 hours to complete the tour. Rector’s Palace

The Rector’s Palace was once the seat of government during the independent republic era in Dubrovnik. Combining late Gothic and early Renaissance styles. The 15th century Palace is now a museum with furnished rooms, Baroque paintings, and historical exhibits. Here you’ll see how the ruling class and aristocracy lived. Today the Rectors Palace houses the Cultural-historic Department of the Dubrovnik Museum with exhibition halls arranged to display the original setting with antique furniture and objects for daily use, as well as paintings by local and Italian masters.
