Support Marlene Dela Cruz: A Mother and Crew Member Battling Cancer

Submitted by kgnadmin on

In times of struggle, one of the most beautiful things that often rises to the surface is the strength and unity of a community. Today, we are calling on the cruise ship crew and beyond to rally around one of our own.

Marlene dela Cruz is a single mother of three boys and a former Beauty Specialist at Harding Brothers aboard Princess Cruises ships. Marlene has dedicated years of her life to making passengers feel their best, is now in the fight of her life against stage 2B breast cancer.

Marlene Dela Cruz
Marlene’s life took unexpected turn on June 15, 2023, when a CT scan revealed the devastating news of a 95% likelihood of malignancy. Just two weeks later, her fears were confirmed—she was diagnosed with breast cancer. As a mother, Marlene’s only thought was for her children. And as a dedicated worker, her first concern was how this would impact the family she was supporting.

Marlene began chemotherapy in October 2023, enduring eight challenging sessions. She then faced surgery in May 2024, followed by 25 exhausting radiation treatments. Now, she is undergoing targeted therapy to combat Her2 positive hormones, with eight more sessions to go.

Initially, her company supported her through her first treatment cycle. But when they classified her illness as non-work-related, they withdrew medical support, leaving Marlene to shoulder the costs of her treatment on her own. She is now unemployed, without the means to cover the overwhelming medical expenses while also providing for her three children. Though she has sought help from the government in the Philippines, the assistance she’s received has been far from enough.

Marlene’s current treatment is critical to her survival, but the costs are high. Her goal is to raise £4,500 through her GoFundMe campaign to cover the costs of her targeted therapy medication and ensure that her children are cared for during this incredibly difficult time.

As a community we understand the hardships that come with being away from home, the sacrifices made to provide for loved ones, and the bonds formed on board that often extend far beyond the ship itself. We know what it means to support one another, to show up for a fellow crew member in their time of need.

This is our chance to do just that. By supporting Marlene, we can help ease the tremendous burden she is carrying and allow her to focus on her health and recovery. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a world of difference for her and her family.

Marlene’s story is one of resilience and love—a mother fighting with everything she has, not just for herself but for the future of her children. And now, more than ever, she needs the power of our collective compassion. We can show her that she is not alone in this fight, that her community stands with her, ready to lift her up when she needs it most.

To the cruise ship crew community, the broader maritime industry, and anyone whose heart is moved by Marlene’s story, let’s come together to give her the support she deserves. Your kindness and generosity can be the strength Marlene needs to push forward.
