After 15 years of service, one of Azamara’s most beloved and admired captains, Johannes Tysse, has announced his departure from the cruise line. The news, which Captain Tysse shared just yesterday, has come as an unexpected surprise to guests and crew alike who have had the pleasure of sailing and working alongside him.
In his announcement, Captain Tysse reflected on his journey with Azamara, saying:
"I can confirm that after 15 years, I have made the bittersweet decision to leave Azamara. I have had the privilege of working with the best teams and crews on the Journey and Quest. I will miss them, and Azamara will always have a special place in my heart. I only wish Azamara the best of continued success. Among our loyal guests, Tonya and I have made dear friends around the world. Leaving Azamara doesn’t mean that I will vanish—Facebook is a good place to stay in touch with friends."
Captain Tysse was among Azamara’s very first captains and quickly became a favorite among guests and crew members alike. Known for his warmth, approachability, and charisma, he made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
I had the privilege to meet Captain Tysse and fondly recalled his sense of humor, particularly his announcements aboard the Azamara Journey about his “identical twin brother,” the Cruise Director Eric De Gray—a joke that never failed to bring smiles to those onboard.
Guests have also taken to social media to share their well-wishes and fond memories of Captain Tysse. One wrote:
"Wishing you the best for the future. So happy we got to sail with you on two different cruise lines. Hopefully, there may be a third in the not-so-distant future. Enjoy your extra time flying around. Keep in touch."
Fair winds and following seas, Captain Johannes Tysse. You will be missed, but your impact will never be forgotten.
