Search Suspended for Norwegian Breakaway Crew Member

A second Norwegian Cruise Line crew member from has been reported overboard in just two weeks, after an incident aboard the Norwegian Breakaway ended without positive outcome.

The crew member went overboard late Saturday night as the ship was sailing back to Boston from Bermuda. The incident occurred shortly after midnight Sunday, east of Cape Cod.

Guests onboard reported hearing the emergency call “Code Oscar, port side,” signaling a person overboard. Crew members immediately launched a full response. The ship turned around, activated floodlights, and deployed rescue boats while scanning the surrounding waters. Access to sections of Decks 7 and 8 was restricted.

The ship alerted the United States Coast Guard, coordinating a search effort that lasted several hours. Despite the rapid response, the crew member could not be located.

In a statement, the cruise line confirmed the incident and said the Coast Guard later assumed control of the search and rescue operation.

“Late in the evening on April 25, 2026, a crew member went overboard east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts,” the company said. “Upon confirming the incident, the vessel immediately informed the United States Coast Guard Marine Rescue Coordination Center and a coordinated search and rescue operation was initiated.”

The company added that the Coast Guard eventually released the vessel to continue its voyage. “The safety, security, and well-being of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the crewmember’s family during this difficult time.”

The search has since been suspended.

According to a message shared with Cruise Law News, the crew member is believed to have been an Indian national working in the ship’s galley.

The emergency response delayed the ship’s arrival into Boston by several hours, with the vessel docking around 11:30 a.m. Sunday. As a result, embarkation for the next seven-night cruise was pushed to later in the afternoon. No changes to the itinerary have been announced.

This marks the second such incident involving a crew member in recent days, following a separate overboard case from the Norwegian Viva.

At this time, no further details about the crew member have been officially released.

For the crew onboard the focus remains on the human loss behind the headlines. Regardless of the circumstances, a life has been lost, leaving behind family, friends, and colleagues now facing an unimaginable loss.
