Chef Morimoto Sets Record With Help From Holland America Line Culinary Team

The World-renowned Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, famed for combining the culinary traditions of Japan with Western flavors, recently achieved a unique culinary record aboard Holland America Line’s Rotterdam.
Morimoto led a remarkable feat creating what is believed to be the longest maki sushi roll ever assembled at sea. With the help of more than 50 crew members from the ship’s culinary team, Morimoto rolled out an astonishing 90-foot-long sushi masterpiece using over 55 pounds of sushi rice, 33 pounds of Big Eye Tuna, and countless sheets of nori.

“As the Global Fresh Fish Ambassador for Holland America Line, I love to bring my passion for sushi to the high seas,” said Morimoto. “Creating the longest sushi maki roll at sea for Holland America was a thrilling challenge, which allowed me to showcase our commitment to using the highest quality and freshest ingredients in a fun and memorable way for Holland America guests."

The event marked the launch of Morimoto’s latest culinary concept at sea — the Morimoto By Sea sushi bar, an intimate specialty venue that made its debut during a Caribbean sailing aboard Rotterdam from March 28 to 31.

Following its successful introduction on Nieuw Amsterdam in 2023, the Morimoto By Sea sushi bar will continue its rollout on Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Eurodam from March to June 2025. Unlike the stand-alone Morimoto restaurant aboard Nieuw Amsterdam, the new venues feature a 12-seat sushi counter adjacent to the Tamarind dining area, offering guests an à la carte selection of Morimoto’s signature sushi, sashimi, rolls, and small plates.
