Princess Cruises has announced an update to its Drug and Alcohol Policy, aimed at improving efficiency, fairness, and consistency while reinforcing its strong commitment to a safe and healthy working environment for all crew members.
Starting December 1, 2025, drug testing will be conducted onboard by the Medical Staff, supported by the HR Officer and Security personnel. This will streamline the process, reduce operational disruption, and minimize the impact on crew rest hours, all while maintaining full compliance with company and regulatory standards.
There are no changes to the existing drug and alcohol definitions or restrictions. For fairness and transparency, a third-party will manage the random selection of crew members who are required to be tested. Those selected will be screened for both alcohol and drugs at the same time.
Testing onboard will be carried out using rapid urine drug test kits. If a sample does not produce a negative result, it will be sent to a third-party laboratory ashore for confirmation and detailed analysis. The lab will identify the specific substance or metabolite and measure its concentration. Final results will then be reviewed and validated by the shore-based medical department in accordance with corporate policy.
Additional third-party testing may also be required when there is reasonable suspicion about a screening result or to detect substances not included in the rapid test panel.
Princess Cruises also reminded all teammates that the possession or use of illegal drugs is considered gross misconduct and may constitute a violation of applicable laws. Any crew member found in breach of the Alcohol and Drug Policy will be immediately removed from duty, pending a full investigation and disciplinary hearing.
Updated policy documents and company-specific instructions will remain posted in crew recreation areas. Crew members with questions are encouraged to contact their HR Officer or supervisor.
