Sapphire Princess Crew Recovers Five Bodies in the Mediterranean

The cruise ship Sapphire Princess was forced to change course during the current western Mediterranean voyage after a routine watch turned into a deeply distressing situation for everyone onboard.

Late in the afternoon on April 21, a crew member spotted an orange object drifting in the water and immediately raised the alarm. What was first believed to be a possible “man overboard” quickly escalated into a full response. The bridge team ordered the ship to turn around and investigate, with the object later identified as a lifejacket.

As the ship repositioned in the area, crew members made a grim discovery. Five bodies were sighted in the water approximately 140 miles off the coast of Cabo de Palos, between Spain and North Africa. The vessel, which had departed from Cagliari on the Italian island of Sardinia, launched a search and recovery operation that lasted several hours as teams carefully scanned the surrounding area to ensure no one else was left behind.

During a three-hour recovery effort, the crew used lifeboats to retrieve the bodies from the sea. According to the captain, none of the individuals were passengers or crew from the ship. Authorities now believe the victims may have been migrants from a vessel reported missing or found adrift earlier in the region.

The atmosphere onboard quickly shifted. Guests described the moment as deeply somber, with blinds drawn across public dining and lounge areas out of respect.

Recognizing the emotional impact, the captain addressed both guests and crew, offering counseling and support services. For crew members, trained to respond to emergencies but still deeply human, the experience was a difficult one to process.

The ship later proceeded to Cartagena, where the five bodies were respectfully transferred for post-mortem examinations. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding their journey.

Our thoughts are with those who lost their lives, and with the crew of Sapphire Princess who handled an incredibly difficult situation with professionalism, care, and dignity.
