Passengers aboard the cruise ship Silver Whisper witnessed an emotional rescue operation in the Pacific Ocean after the vessel responded to a distress call involving a disabled yacht with an injured crew member onboard.
The rescue took place during Silver Whisper’s current 24-day Transpacific, Reposition Spring voyage from Papeete to Vancouver.
After receiving the Coast Guard’s distress call, Captain Michele Macarone Palmieri immediately altered course. Silver Whisper, traveling across the Pacific Ocean, was reportedly about seven hours away from the disabled yacht when the emergency request came in.
Passengers later gathered on deck as the damaged sailboat slowly came into view, bobbing in the swells off the ship’s port side. The yacht had lost its mast, leaving it unable to continue sailing. According to guests onboard, the lone sailor had suffered what was later described as a shoulder injury.
Working in coordination with the Coast Guard, Silver Whisper’s bridge team carefully approached the disabled vessel before crew members launched the rescue operation. Despite the challenging Pacific conditions, the transfer was carried out successfully and the injured sailor was brought safely aboard the cruise ship for medical attention.
Guests onboard praised the captain and crew for their calm and professional response, with many describing the rescue as emotional and unforgettable. After the sailor’s condition was stabilized, Silver Whisper resumed its voyage toward Vancouver.
