What’s a Captain Without a crew?

12 years 6 months ago
The captain is a leader, but the leader needs to earn the respect of his crew, otherwise what’s a Captain Without a crew?

The crew is the soul of a Ship, which works upon the ship to give it direction, maintains it and gives it purpose. The captain trusts the crew, the crew trusts the captain, and the ship trusts both crew and captain. Without the necessity of trust, or faith, all three are devoid of purpose, meaning or even the possibility of survival. In trust lies the goodness of the crew- and the captain.

But is it always like this on a cruise ship? There are different types of captains who deserve the respect from the crew and the once who think they are gods.

The first kind are the true captains, the ones who truly care and the crew can feel that. For this captains crew members are ready to do anything and will stand by their captain in the toughest moments. In one word they are true leaders. They know the names of most of the crew members and even they know some of their family. I was lucky enough to meet some of them and you will see them not only talking to the passengers but also with the crew.

Unlike them the so-called god captains, think they own the ship and everything on it. They have fake smiles in front of the guest and no smile for the crew members. Newly hired crewmembers fear them and the old-timers think they are big Trosos and they don’t care. They have time for crewmembers only when they need to sign warning or when some crewmember messed up something so they have chance to yell and publicly humiliate the crew member. Unfortunately you will find lots of them on a cruise ships.

The captain is a leader, but the leader needs to earn the respect of his crew, otherwise what’s a Captain Without a crew?
