Pride of America dry docks for inspection at Pearl Harbor

May 04, 2024

Over the past weekend, the Hawaii based cruise ship Pride of America paid a rare visit to the Pearl Harbor dry dock for a routine inspection at the Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility. It doesn't happen very often, but it can be done.

While Navy ships typically have priority at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, a scheduling window allowed the Norwegian Cruise Line ship, Pride of America, to undergo a routine 2-day survey locally. This option was preferable to traveling thousands of miles to the U.S. West Coast, which would have adversely affected the local economy and disrupted NCL's operating schedule. Performing the inspection locally also supports the robust ship repair industry.

NCL collaborated with Pacific Shipyards International (PSI) for this inspection at Dry Dock #4. PSI served as the prime contractor, managing the dry-docking operations. This partnership was made possible through a Public-Private Partnership Agreement, utilizing the temporary availability of a government facility. The cruise ship was moved into the dry dock on Friday afternoon, the inspection occurred on Saturday, and it was back afloat early Sunday morning, finishing the job 1.5 hours ahead of schedule.
