Women make up just 2% of the global seafaring workforce, but a new initiative aims to change that. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) is officially launching the Women at Sea network, a platform designed to support, empower, and connect women in the maritime industry.
The official launch will take place with a webinar on March 7, 2025, at 12:00 GMT, chaired by ITF Maritime Coordinator Jacqueline Smith. The event will feature speakers from the Norwegian Seafarers’ Union, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and industry leaders who will discuss the challenges and opportunities for women at sea.
The Women at Sea network, which went live earlier this year, serves as a dedicated hub offering resources for women working at sea or considering a maritime career. The initiative, created by ITF affiliates, focuses on:
Boosting female representation in the maritime industry.
Supporting career growth for women already working at sea.
Strengthening communication between seafarers, unions, and the ITF.
Increasing visibility of women in maritime roles.
Ensuring workplace safety, tackling issues like discrimination, sexual harassment, and bullying.
Beyond career development, the platform also provides well-being resources, offering networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and mental health support.
A Step Toward Equality at Sea
The maritime sector has long been a male-dominated industry, but with initiatives like Women at Sea, the ITF hopes to break down barriers and create a more inclusive future. By addressing systemic challenges and advocating for policy changes, the federation aims to make the seas a safer and more welcoming place for women.
