Britain Blames Argentina for Suspension of Cruises to the Falkland Islands

The decision of two cruise companies to cancel their scales in the Falklands infuriated the British Foreign Office, which accused the Argentina and vowed to bring the protest to the European Union.

Last Monday, a group protested infront of a travel agency that sells Retirement packages for cruises that pass through Malvinas and threw stones and petrol bombs and smashed windows of the front of the room.

Hours later, a Dutch and a German canceled their scheduled stops in Port Stanley (Puerto Argentino) for the next few days. One company argued that the decision was due "to the current political situation in Argentina". The other, blamed the bad weather on the islands, although there is no weather alert these days. In the islands sounded the alarms. The cruisers and tourists bring about $ 16 million in annual revenue for the Falklands.

"We are deeply concerned that companies have decided to cancel their visits to the Falklands (Malvinas) after a violent act of intimidation against its agents in Buenos Aires," said Foreign Office spokesman quoted by the London Telegraph and Daily Mail "is shameful that elements in a large country like Argentina seek to strangle a small group of islands. "They added that the British government believed that "Cristina Kirchner is partially responsible" for the protest and therefore Quebracho Argentine diplomats gave an "angry protest".

"We're not the only ones who had problems with Argentina for acting outside of international standards. Spain also had. So we hope to raise with our EU partners a complaint to Argentina for violating its commitments to the World Trade Organization, "concluded the British diplomats.
