Carnival crew member crushed to death

Carnival Conquest crew member working from an aerial lift on the ship, died after he was crushed between the lift and a lifeboat platform.

There were two men in the platform at the time of the accident and the other man - who was operating the lift - was not injured in the incident.

A Coast Guard spokesman said a worker was painting the side of the ship when other workers lifted the man lift, which flipped over and crushed the victim between the lift and the deck. The crew member was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS.

Carnival issued statement saying: "Earlier today, while a crew member from the Carnival Conquest was elevated in a cherry picker performing maintenance work on the side of the vessel, he became wedged between the cherry picker and a platform holding one of the ship's lifeboats. The ship's medical team responded, along with local paramedics, but, tragically, the crew member died. The ship was docked in its home port of New Orleans at the time.

"We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to our crew member's family and loved ones in the wake of this terrible tragedy. Everyone in the Carnival family is heartbroken."

The name and nationality of the crew member is not released in the public.  U.S. Coast Guard opened investigation about the death and no details will be released until the investigation is complete.
