CLIA Strengthens Humanitarian Ties with Mercy Ships

Submitted by kgnadmin on

The cruise industry is reaffirming its commitment to global humanitarian efforts through a renewed partnership with Mercy Ships, a nonprofit organization that provides free medical care aboard hospital ships. With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Mercy Ships and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), this collaboration is set to continue making a positive impact worldwide.

How the Cruise Industry Supports Mercy Ships
For nearly 50 years, Mercy Ships has brought life-changing surgeries and medical care to communities that lack access to healthcare. The organization operates the world’s largest civilian hospital ships, Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, staffed by volunteers from over 60 countries.

The cruise industry has been a key supporter of Mercy Ships, offering assistance in several ways, including:
Encouraging cruise employees to volunteer aboard Mercy Ships
Providing financial aid to fund medical missions
Donating resources and equipment to support ship operations

"At Mercy Ships, we deeply value our long-term partnership with CLIA; this agreement underscores our shared commitment to using our ships and crews to positively impact the lives of people around the world," said Gert van de Weerdhof, CEO of Mercy Ships.

Shared Mission of Helping Others
The collaboration highlights the cruise industry’s broader efforts to give back to communities beyond tourism. CLIA President and CEO Bud Darr emphasized the importance of supporting Mercy Ships, stating:

"Mercy Ships’ transformative impact is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved in this prestigious nonprofit. The cruise industry has long supported Mercy Ships; it’s an honor to partner with this organization and continue promoting its humanitarian work around the world."

In addition to providing life-saving surgeries, Mercy Ships focuses on training local medical professionals, strengthening healthcare systems, and leaving a lasting impact in the regions it serves. This partnership ensures that the cruise industry continues to play a vital role in bringing healthcare to those who need it most.
