Concorida Captain Sues Costa Cruises

As reported today by the Italian newspaper La Republica, the captain of Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino  plans to sue Costa Cruises. Schettino says he "believes that he acted correctly" and does not accept the dismissal. For this reason, "through his lawyers, has already appealed before the Labour Court questioning the motivation for cause and asking for reinstatement and payment of back wages.

Brief statement released by Costa Cruises says: “Costa Cruises has concluded the disciplinary proceedings initiated against Schettino after the sinking of the Costa Concordia, ordering dismissal. The dismissal was formalized at the end of July. Company has decided to apply the sanction of dismissal in accordance with the law and contractual provisions. "

Costa lawyers accuse Schettino for his orders and maneuvers that led to the disaster. Some behaviors assessed as serious breaches of Navigation Code. Allegedly Schettino drink wine one hour before the accident as some passengers report and abandoning the ship when there were still hundreds of passengers on board .

Costa Cruises is also under investigation along with Roberto Ferrarini, Manfred Ursprunger and Paul Mattesi.
