Cozumel Less Popular for the Cruise Lines

Despite being one of the leading cruise destinations in the world, Cozumel could lose this title  because of international routes reprogramming by the cruise companies. According to the Port Authority, from January to September 2011 Cozumel visited over  2,000,000 cruise passengers, while during the same period in 2012 1,700,000 visited  the island. In 2011, 839 ships visited Cozumel and 614 in 2012, that’s 225 arrivals less.

The president of Amepact reported that this decrease is due to rerouting generated by an aggressive commercial competition between the carriers and destinations. "All Caribbean routes have fallen a bit, but will stand up to close the year well, this is due to strong international competition. It has to do with routes, products and prices."

Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line and other cruise companies are deploying their ships to destinations such as Brazil, Chile, Spain and Asia. Cozumel Quintana Roo state is consolidating its market renewing business strategies and reservations are expected to increase again.
