Crew Member Faces Up to Three Years in Prison for Sexual Contact

A crew member was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a woman during a cruise when the ship docked in New Jersey over the weekend.

FBI Agents arrested the 25-year-old Karan Seechurn from Mauritius on Saturday when the ship, which had traveled from Bayonne, N.J., to the Bahamas, returned to New Jersey.

FBI didn’t said for which cruise line Seechurn worked but they did say that he was working in the Bar Department and was responsible for re-stocking minibars in passengers' rooms, giving him access to keys to passengers rooms.

On Dec. 23, the Mauritius the crew member entered a sleeping woman's room and touched her inappropriately, prosecutors said. When the woman tried to leave her room, Seechurn pulled her back and threatened to burn down the cruise ship if she told anyone, the release stated.

Seechurn appeared in chains and handcuffs in Newark federal court and responded quickly and fluently in English to Judges questions.

If convicted the crew member can be sentenced of maximum of three years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine and supervision for one year after his release, and he will be required to register as a sex offender.
