Crew Shore Leave Restricted in New York

May 19, 2023

Crew Center received concerning news regarding the crew shore leave in New York. A crew member, who wishes to remain anonymous, has informed us that shore leave is currently not permitted.

At this time, we are working to gather more information to determine if this restriction applies to a specific cruise line or affects all cruise ships sailing to New York.

An email has been circulated among the crew, stating that, with immediate effect, shore leave has been cancelled.

According to the email, no crew members are permitted to disembark the ship until further notice. This decision has been made in response to a recent incident where a crew member deserted the ship in New York, the crew member said. The situation has prompted these stringent measures to be put in place by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“Bad news from New York CBP - crew shore leave has been cancelled with immediate effect.

No crew are allowed to get off the ship anymore... (until further notice anyway),” the email reads.

We understand the frustration and disappointment this brings, especially for the hardworking crew members who deserve their time ashore. It's disheartening that the actions of one individual have impacted the entire crew.

Update: Our source said that the cruise ship Marella Discovery crew was denied shore leave by CBP in New York.
