Cruise ship crashes into lock wall, 19 passengers and 3 crew members injured

Cruise ship with European tourists traveling from Ontario, Canada, hit a wall in upstate New York, injuring 19 passengers and three crew members, officials said.

The United States Coast Guard said the 286 feet cruise ship was sailing from Montreal when he hit the wall to enter the Eisenhower lock on the Saint Lawrence Seaway in Massena, near the Canadian border, shortly after 9 pm Thursday.

There were 273 people on board, including 81 crew members and 192 passengers who were mainly French and Swiss.

The cruise operator, FleetPro based in Miami, said the injured were treated at the Massena Memorial Hospital and was discharged. The company said all the injuries were minor.

Saint Laurent was entering the lock when he hit against a bumper on a wall, according to Petty Officer Lauren Laughlin Ninth Coast Guard District headquartered in Cleveland, including the St. Lawrence River and Seaway. The impact made a hole in the hull, which caused him to enter water, Laughlin added. A group of rescuers and other Coast Guard were reviewing the damage to determine the best way to move the ship.

The company Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. by Seaway, based in Washington DC, said the ship is stable.

FleetPro, previously known as International Shipping Partners, said the ship runs completely to transport passengers. The company said the ship was on the first day of a 10 day trip, which began on Montreal when the accident occurred.
