Personal Care Staff Department
The cruise passengers' well-being is the main priority for those in the personal care staff department. Their job's nature is the same as those you see in cities except that they work on a ship.
This category includes beauty therapists, fitness instructors, hairstylists, manicurists, massage therapists, physicians, and nurses. On most ships, these are high-paid jobs, and they include many benefits besides the attractive salary package.
Service and Hospitality Management Department
Also known as "hotel management jobs" in the cruise industry, positions in this department render direct services to passengers. These services include housekeeping, serving food and beverages, laundry, and other related assistance.
Cooks, receptionists, cabin stewards, and bartender staff belong to this department.
Activity and Shipboard Entertainment Department
Jobs in this category coordinate the daily shows and activities on board. They make sure that all passengers participate and enjoy the recreational activities provided. The cruise director is usually in charge of this department. This department is the one that takes care of passengers' entitlement level on board the ship, and if you are a fun, outgoing, engaging person, this could be a good job for you.
Deck and Engineering Department
People in this department usually work behind the curtain of the cruise industry. They are in charge of keeping the ship running smoothly. These are the crew members who work side by side with the Captain.
Knowledge about safety maritime laws and regulations are their expertise. This department includes the Captain, engineer, chief officer, and electrician.
Adventure and Water Sports Jobs
Many cruise ships have pools or even entire waterparks. This is another area where you can secure a job if you have training but no cruise ship experience. Cruise ships' adventure and water sports jobs include lifeguards, swimming instructors, and diving instructors.
Suppose you don't have any experience saving people's lives in the water but have management experience. In that case, you can secure a job as a waterpark manager or a similar position. Generally speaking, this job is not easy, and it has a huge responsibility level. Maybe too much responsibility.
Photography Jobs
You may not know it, but photographers are vital to every cruise ship. They capture the unforgettable moments for the cruise ship passengers; their job is to create a lifetime memory for the guests. They take photos of passengers embarking and disembarking, capture key moments during parties and events, and offer guests a way to digitize the memories they make on their cruise. Photographers are also hired for marketing purposes and may be part of the cruise line's marketing team and photo editors. If this sounds like a career for you, get started on your portfolio now.
The Photo Department on a cruise ship could consist of 3 to 15 photographers (depending on the size of the ship) and offers the following jobs: photo manager, assistant photo manager, photographer, junior photographer, and videographer (the videographer position with some cruise lines is within the Cruise Activities / Criuse Staff Department). Seen everywhere on board and ashore, the photographers and videographers constantly entertain passengers and crew while creating instant memories for everyone around them. Most photographers are employed through concessionaire companies. Some cruise lines run their photo department operations. In general, the work of the Photo Department team members aboard a cruise ship could be subdivided into three main categories of activities - shooting photos (or videos for videographers), processing and printing the footage (work in the lab), and selling the images, videos, and other related retail items in the ship's Photo Gallery.
It is tough to name all the events and activities on a cruise ship that the photographers or videographers could capture. There are two typical working days for a photographer on a cruise ship - a port day (when the ship is in port) and a sea day (when the ship is at sea sailing between ports). On a port day, the cruise ship photographer would take photos at the gangway when passengers are leaving or entering the ship or ashore, where photographers may attend some of the tours, taking pictures of passengers with great scenery in the background - glaciers, volcanoes, important landmarks, etc. When the ship stops at one of the many "private islands" cruise lines have in the Caribbean, the photographers take beach photos. On a sea day, photographers would take photos entirely on the ship. On formal nights cruise ship photographers will shoot full-length portraits and photos with the Captain and take pictures around the ship's dining room tables. The range of photographs will include professional portraiture to candid or social photography. On special theme nights, cruise ship photographers will dress up in different costumes and pose with passengers - as pirates on a Caribbean cruise, as animals on a cruise to Alaska, etc. Another aspect of the cruise ship photographer's job is taking wedding pictures. The number of weddings taking place aboard cruise ships is increasing, and this is an opportunity for practicing wedding photography and earning additional income for ship photographers.
The pictures are processed and printed in the ship's photo lab. Not all cruise ship photography team members are qualified to perform this task. There is onboard training, though; by the end of the first contract, most photographers have become familiar with processing and printing photos. Similarly, cruise ship videographers edit and transfer their video footage to discs.
Their regular duties include selling photos, videos, and related items. This activity occurs aboard the cruise ship in the Photo Gallery and the Photo Retail Shop. The photographer assumes the photo retail sales consultant role and sells photos, videos, albums, frames, folios, cameras, and photo accessories, thus earning individual sales commissions. The Photo Retail Shop aboard cruise ships also offers to print photos taken by guests with their cameras. Regarding this aspect of the job, selling ability is essential. The better salesman, a ship photographer is, the higher commission they will earn at the end of the cruise.
There are many other jobs available to work on the cruise ship. Sometimes it's better not to rush and take your time deciding which job is best for you.
