Eight Crew members Under Investigation for Concordia Disaster

Italian court in Grosseto have broaden the Costa Concordia investigation and eight other crew members together with the ships owners are faulted for delays and safety braches.
On the hearing scheduled for next month will be called Francesco Schettino, who is charged for manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning the ship before all passengers and Costa's crisis coordinator Roberto Ferrarini, who is also under investigation together with a bridge officers.

According to the experts, the responsibility for the accident is not entirely attributable to the captain Francesco Schettino as it is revealed that the Indonesian helmsman Jacob Rusli Bin made a mistake in the approaching maneuver to the coast. According to the experts, it was a communication error between the master and helmsman that caused the impact, which is why Rusli is now under investigation for the sinking of Concordia.

The experts appointed by the court explained every moment in details in a 270-page analysis using data and voice recorders to reconstruct Concordia disaster. They pointed all breached aspects on board with the maritime rules and procedures and determined that Schettino should have given the "abandon ship" order at 10 p.m. that night, 15 minutes after the 9:45 p.m. grounding against the rocks off Giglio. However orders for abandoning ship were given at 10:43 p.m not by Schettino but by another senior officer which is in violation of maritime rules.

Experts state that after ship abandoning signals some crew members from the bridge could not execute the orders because of a language barriers. Further the report states that some crew members weren't trained or certified in security and emergency drills. This conclusion was rejected by Costa Cruises saying the alleged defects in the certifications of some of the crew didn't affect the evacuation.
Conclusion from the experts is that the captain of Concordia and his bridge crew showed lack of professionalism and communication before and during the disaster.

The company Costa Cruises is under investigation for delays in alerting the coastal authorities about the emergency situation. This charge was denied by Costa Cruises, stating that Schettino was the one who needed to alert authorities about the accident, and that the captain assured the Costa crew on land that he had done so.
