Electrocuted Crew Member Died

A 45-year-old Lebanese crew member on Orient Queen 2 died yesterday after being electrocuted in Cypriot waters. The crew member was airlifted to Paphos General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to a statement of defense ministry, the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) received a call at 2.30pm from the cruise ship Orient Queen 2, saying the Lebanese crew member had been electrocuted.After efforts by the ship’s medical team failed to help the man regain consciousness, the captain called for an immediate transfer to a hospital in Cyprus. The RCC responded to call sending helicopter with a medical team and transferred the crew member to Paphos hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The ship, sailing 33 nautical miles north-west of Akamas, was on the Beirut-Rhodes route. Sailing under Panama flag, Orient Queen 2 is operated by a Lebanese company AbouMerhi Cruises founded in June 2005.
Lebanese Embassy was immediately informed about this tragic event by the Department of Consular Affairs.
