Fifth Norovirus Outbreak strikes cruise ship in a single year

Fred Olsen confirmed an outbreak of Gastrointestinal illness aboard his cruise ship Boudicca that reached more than 80 out of 763 passengers during a ten days cruise  in Scandinavia.

The British press says that this is a fifth outbreak that happens aboard this ship in a single year, especially in March, April and May.

Boudicca will return to Belfast, which he left for a "program of intensive cleaning and disinfection," will include a fumigation of the ship, made by an outside company.

A spokesman for Fred Olsen also reminded that this type of infection is common in hospitals, schools, hotels, cruise ships and other areas where people coexist closely. The disease is more contagious than the common cold and is transmitted person to person by contact.

The next cruise on Boudicca program is a 12 days journey in Madeira and the Canary.

Fred Olsen acknowledges that it will handle each case with the concerns of passengers, stressing that "the company works to the highest standards of hygiene and disinfection, fulfilling all the parameters required by the authorities.
