Laser Sensors will be instaled on AIDA ships

A new laser-based emissions sensor, manufactured by Norfolk, Virginia-based WRSystems, is being
fitted on two new-build ships being constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for Carnival Cruise
Linesn AIDA Cruise brand. The new system, called Emsys, is capable of detecting, wight great
accuracy, levels of NOx, SOx, and CO2 in its standard configuration. The system can also be set up to
measure smoke (opacity), particulate matter, methane, and carbon monoxide.

These two new ships are to be the largest ever constructed for AIDA Cruises, each coming in at about
125,000 tons. They are to be constructed and kept to the highest environmental standards, featuring
new technologies to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.

According to WRSystems, the Emsys system is inteded to help the maritime industry comply with
MARPOL Annex VI Maritime Emissions Regulations. A Global Positioning System (GPS) interface
and electronic charting also offer aid in voyage compliance management within Emission Control Area
zones.
