Norovirus outbreak on Crown Princess

United States Center for Disease and Control reported Norovirus outbreak onboard Crown Princess, cruise ship operated by Princess Cruises. CDC says 180 passengers and 24 crew members have reported being ill during the cruise departing on January 3 and ending on January 18, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

The company implemented intensive cleaning and disinfection procedures during the cruise and after the disembarkation in Los Angeles, following the USPH outbreak prevention and response plan. Two CDC environmental health officers and one epidemiologist boarded Crown Princess and collected stool specimens from crew and passenger for testing. Specimens were tested onboard using a norovirus rapid test and results showed positive for norovirus.

In consultation with the CDC officers, Crown Princess implemented following sanitation procedures:

  • Staged disembarkation for guests infected by the Norovirus to limit the opportunity of illness to transmit to well guests.
  • Planned sanitation on board the cruise ship and curuise terminal.
