"The main focus of contribution is the extension of the pier, tourists would arrive directly at the port, and with them new establishments." said Rivas.

Royal Caribbean filed an investment project in the city of San Juan del Sur on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, which aims to provide adequate facilities to receive large cruise ships. Although there are feasibility studies to see if the initiative is viable, the news has been very well received from the location authoraties.

"The main focus of contribution is the extension of the pier, tourists would arrive directly at the port, and with them new establishments." said Rivas.

Royal Caribbean intentions are to build a large spring in the area, plus a hotel, restaurants and shops.

The president of the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism, Mario Salinas, who also confirmed that the mega project is now being analyzed, said that the project will have several stages of development, and that the first would be implemented with money from the Inter-American Development Bank.

The amount of investment is not yet know ,however it appears that the National Port Company appreciates the opportunity to give this port concession for several years to the cruise company to boost its development.

Salinas has even considered that given the investment could increase by up to 75% of cruise arrivals to the country, currently Nicaragua is visited by 50 ships a year.
