Passengers sailing aboard Royal Caribbean ships that sail to Mexican ports-of-call posted a photo that shows a letter by the company, addressing the current smoking policy in Mexico and how this might affect guests if they smoke in public areas and other venues.
The letter, informs passengers to be aware of the new smoking policy and the fact that they might face up to 300$ fine, or potential 36-hour detention, which can result in guests missing the ship, and potentially ending their cruise vacation.
The following letter was distributed to passengers aboard Royal Caribbean's Adventure of The Seas, which is sailing a combined 4 and 5 Night Western Caribbean Cruise with stops in Cozumel, Mexico.
"Effective January 15, 2023, Mexico has banned all forms of smoking (including e-cigarettes) in public spaces, including hotels, parks, restaurants, and beaches. As you go ashore in Mexico, please keep this in mind, as failure to comply may result in steep fines and/or being detained for up to 36 hours.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
We look forward to enjoying this destination and the rest of our time together," the letter sent to guests reads.
Mexico’s law is currently among the most robust smoking prohibitions and tobacco advertisement law's in the world.
A law that was approved in 2008 took effect on January 15, 2023, prohibits smoking in public and indoor spaces like bars beach resorts and restaurants. The new policy also bans tobacco advertising and sponsorship, as well as display of cigarettes in shops and puts limits on e-cigarettes.
The World Health and the Pan American Health organizations praised the announcement, noting that 10% of deaths in Mexico each year are caused by tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.
