After almost two years without cruise ships in the Port of Valparaiso because of the pandemic, finally the first ship opened the season 2021-2022. It was Viking Jupiter, which docked there on Tuesday around 8 a.m. with a capacity of more than a thousand passengers (tourists and crew).
A welcoming ceremony was thrown for tourists by the local and regional authorities: the mayor of Valparaiso Jorge Sharp; The Minister of Health Georg Hubner; and the general manager of Puerto Valparaiso Juan Marcos Mancilla. The aim of the ceremony was “to make this group of tourists feel very comfortable in the city.” More cruise ships are expected to arrive in this city and that feeds the hope for the next season to become double or triple in numbers, according to the mayor of Valparaiso. This visit brought 784 people and when it comes to the health protocols, this cruise company has a daily PCR control on the passengers to avoid possible infections during the cruise.
Francisco Godoy, general manager of the Regional Tourism Corporation, highlighted that “we are very happy to receive the cruises again here in the Valparaiso region, we have been working together with the different tourism entrepreneurs, Seremi de Salud, Sernatur to establish all protocols and help visitors arriving in the region.”
