If you're looking for a unique cultural experience in Indonesia, don’t miss the Alek Bakajang Festival, a riverside celebration that blends tradition with a modern twist. Held annually on the Batang Mahat River in Nagari Gunuang Malintang, located in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra, this vibrant festival draws thousands of visitors from across the region.
What to Expect
From April 3–7, the river comes alive with massive, hand-built replica cruise ships—meticulously crafted models inspired by iconic vessels from Disney Cruise Line, TUI Cruises, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line style ship. These floating marvels are impressively detailed, complete with lifeboats, open decks, swimming pools, and mock-up amenities, giving them an astonishing resemblance to real ocean liners.
A Tradition Rooted in History
Originally, locals used simple canoes and boats to participate in this tradition. Over time, these evolved into elaborate replicas constructed by the village’s four founding clans—Domo, Piliang, Melayu, and Pagar Cancang. Each clan showcases their creativity by building a unique ship, turning the event into a friendly competition and a proud display of craftsmanship.
The River Parade
During the festival, the replica cruise ships float down the Batang Mahat River in a grand parade, accompanied by traditional music, cultural performances, and cheering crowds. More than just a spectacle, the procession honors the region’s heritage and reinforces bonds within the community.
Behind the Scenes
The shipbuilding process is a true community effort. Planning starts months in advance, with teams—especially local youth—gathering at suraus (prayer houses) to begin construction. Although the actual building phase takes about a week, the effort reflects deep-rooted values of cooperation, tradition, and artistic pride.
