Breastfeeding Policy on Carnival Cruise Line

After releasing the story to Fox 46, about her humiliating breastfeeding experience on board Carnival cruise ship, Crystal Silvas, a mother of two children got the apology by the cruise line. In a statement Carnival also released their breastfeeding policy on their cruise ships saying “Guests traveling on a Carnival cruise are free to breastfeed in any location on board.  We sincerely apologize if your viewer was given information to the contrary or made to feel uncomfortable. We are further researching this and will ensure the shipboard team is clear that women are free to breastfeed in both public and private areas of the ship.”

There is no official information on most of the cruise lines websites about their breastfeeding policy, except the experiences shared by passengers on the forum Cruise Critic. The news media has reported numerous incidents in which people have objected or forbid women from breastfeeding and even verbally assaulted the mothers.

According to CDC.gov “No laws in the United States forbid breastfeeding outside of the home, and only two states (Illinois and Missouri) place any limitation on public breastfeeding. State laws protect public breastfeeding by expressly stating a woman has a right to breastfeed in public or by specifying that the act of breastfeeding is not indecent exposure.”
