China is Building Cruise City

New Project in Chinese city Xiamen, called Cruise City is on the way.

New Project in Chinese city Xiamen, called Cruise City is on the way. Situated just across the strait from Taiwan, Xiamen has recently become a bustling tourism destination. This futuristic project worth US$2.6 billion is part of Xiamen's economic structural reform to shift focus to Chinese consumption among the booming middle class to spur economic growth.
International Cruise City will cover an area of 100,000 square meters, total construction area of 287,000 square meters, including: 95,000 square meters of apartments, 50,000 square meters of high-end residential, high-end office space of 62,000 square meters, integrated shopping mall of about 30,000 square meters. The five-star hotels of more 50,000 square meters will be situated next to the state of the art cruise terminal.
The Chinese media announced that in five years, tourists arriving in Cruise City will be able to have as much fun as they do in Las Vegas, without the gambling, of course.

Part of this project is a 100,000 ton cruise ship named Xiamen China and will be able to carry 2,000 passengers. Construction of the first luxury cruise ship produced in local yards  is scheduled to finish in about four years.

"The cruise industry gives Xiamen's struggling shipbuilders a good chance to move up the industry value chain by focusing on building luxury cruise ships," said Chen Yumin, an official with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd.

"With our own cruise liner, it will be easier to design cruise routes and develop our own tourism products," said Huang Ju, chief operational officer of the subsidiary of Shan Hai Shu.
This project will enable Xiamen to compete with the stiff competition from the neighboring ports with excellent infrastructure such as Shanghai and Hong Kong.
