Cruise ship calls off search for missing Chilean crew member

A 26 year old Chilean crew member fell overboard on Saturday from Cunard Queen Mary 2 when sailing off the coast Newfoundland.

The search of the missing crew member Favio who was working as Assistant Chef started when his supervisors noticed his absence, when he didn’t reported to duty in the galley.

Upon confirmation that he was not onboard, the captain sounded the alarm and turned the cruise ship back sailing the same route in hope to find him. The Bridge announced to the passengers and crew that one crew member was missing and asked for help from the passengers to watch from deck 7 in hope to find the missing man. The Captain immediately notified the Canadian Coast Guard who was searching for the crew member in the area of the coast of the region of Nova Scotia.

The thick fog made it impossible to air search tracking form the Coast Guard and for the Queen Mary 2

Subsequently, the cruise line Cunard confirmed through a statement that the search ended due to the fact that no one can survive for so long in the Atlantic and said, "we must assume that he died in the water,".

Cunard spokesperson, said, "in conjunction with local authorities we carried out an extensive search of the area where he fell overboard, but unfortunately there is no trace". “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, which has been informed, as well as friends and his colleagues on board.”

For all who are onboard Queen Marry 2 there is a collection box in support of Favio's family at the pursers desk. For those onshore who would like to donate in his memory then please follow the link below. It will be administered by me and all monies passed to his family in Chile.
