MSC Cruise Ship to Serve as a Floating Hotel for Tokyo Olympics

May 28, 2018

Sports fans during Tokyo Summer Olympic Games in 2020 will be housed on cruise ships announced Tokyo Metropolitan Government. For this purpose, Tokyo officials had already reached an agreement with the cruise line MSC Cruises for chartering their cruise ship “MSC Lirica”. From 24 July to 9 August 2020 this vessel will house some 2,000 guests in 1000 staterooms.

The "hotel ship" concept is one of the measures used by the Olympic host cities to address an anticipated accommodation shortage during the sporting events. This concept was first used during the Athens Olympics in 2004 and adopted in 2010 Vancouver Winter Games, and London and Rio Summer Olympics.

Cruise ships could provide a sizable relief for hotel infrastructure during the Olympics, as the Port of Tokyo has three wharves capable of mooring large size ships. Tokyo city officials say that MSC Lirica will be docked at a pier in Koto Ward. The government and MSC Cruises will discuss details of its operation after signing a memorandum.

The government will also allow several other piers on Tokyo Bay for other cruise ships to be used as floating hotels for temporary accommodations.
