Everyone knows that the official language on board is English, however there are many words that are only used on board by all crew members. Some words come from English, Spanish, Italian Tagalog language and Balkan Region. For you who always listened and have no idea what it means or will embark on cruise ship certainly will hear them. So here is the list of words that crew uses on cruise ship. Of course you may have another interpretation on board depending on the cruise line. Overall, these are the words most frequently used on board:

  • AndiamoWho worked in Italian company knows what it is. Everyone uses it all the time. It is something like "Come." But they end up using to rush it.
  • BaclatI do not quite know where it comes from that word, but I saw many Filipinos and Indonesians using. That is, a way of speaking that someone is gay, but with a playful tone.
  • BasuraIn Spanish means "garbage". The ship is no different, what changes is that they use the word to talk about people. You will always hear someone calling someone basura
  • BomboclatAlso widely used by Asians, it means something like "idiot, troxa, clown etc". They use mostly as a form of play and you will also notice if someone is serious.
  • BrataThat everyone will hear one day on board. Brata mean fucked. Sometimes I fucked a lot. When the ship stops at a port which is up to 14h and all passengers should be on board until that time, will give brata to the restaurant staff, who will have to serve passengers who come back hungry, wanting to eat up the captain. Shipping day, brata to reception, I have to guide pax on several things. The queue is huge. At sea is brata to various departments because all pax are on board. Some people are in brata in relationships, is getting with two people at once on board ?? Haha, Brata my friend!
  • BridgeIt is the Command Bridge. Where are the captain and his dogs. The sight of the bridge is amazing, watch a sunset from there, is priceless. They also enjoy to take a look at the Crew Beach, where the dancers spend the day doing topless. It is from there that leave all signs and emergency information. Any problem "call the bridge ..."
  • Cabin PartyYou know when you want to put São Paulo in the Santos? The Cabin Party is like that. 15 people (or more) in a cabin that sleeps two. The nights are very lively when there Cabin Party, is a legal mess. The stories are becoming the best and the fun is certain. Always will have a Cabin Party after a Crew Party, it is law. Try going the best, you have the wrong middle guys and if you are together, wheel well. But most are always good and crowded.
  • Call the bridge (connects to bridge)And when someone you do not like. Do not even cry, or they will tell you "call the bridge." Every phone on board connects to the bridge, then some SOB will always tell you "call the bridge" when you're pissed off about something.
  • Cambuza or CambuzeiroIs the person responsible for making the supply of all (or almost all) of the items that are used at the buffet or department in question. At the bar, that person would be barboy, only earning much more. It is a function through bullshit, because you have to pull the troller always crowded deck of things 0 to the deck 9 and organize all the "exemption" (can not remember the name now) and freezers. Usually the supervisors ask if you are willing to work in this role. It's a bit heavy, but it has benefits because you can have contact with several people who provide things on the ship. I had several friends that role, and always could nutella, polenguinho boxes to a few bottles of wine and have a chance to give some escapades, make a mamagaio during the day and even make your own schedule, if everything is stocked.
  • HoodHead in Italian. Everyone uses the word "Capo" is referring to the head or not. We call friends of capo, supervisor, crewbartender and even my brother, when I landed.
  • CaputIt is used for everything. If you are the thread of Rabiola only, caput. He broke the TV booth, caput. Everything broke that're shit. Caput!
  • CazzoEveryone should know what happened to the Costa Concordia (Vada a bordo, cazzo!), And thereafter, the word is always used. Cazzo can mean several things, but the best word is "fuck." Then you play as you want and with the various meanings of the word "fuck" that exist.
  • Crew ChiefHave a good relationship with this guy (sometimes woman). It's who solves many of the operational problems of the crews. Cabin exchange, to be alone in the cabin, having someone to clean, escape the Cabin Inspection, eat after hours in the mess, party in the cabin and a thousand other things, go through it and assistants. So be his friend.
  • Crew AreaIt is the area reserved for the crew, where they all cabins, mess, Crew Bar Crew Gym, Smoking Point and offices responsible for the crew. It is also the paths of Crews inside the ship to avoid the passenger area. It is forbidden to passengers but as the crew are always in their areas, outside of working hours, now and then comes a prowling passenger in the crew area.
  • CREW BARYikes! I do not know what to say of the Crew Bar. This is our favorite space. It happens where most events take place, is where we go most nights after work or rest in an afternoon break, is where they get most of rolls and friends, is where you pay $ 0.25 for a Coke Cola and $ 50 for a beer, where we left all our Crew Pass, where we see fights, arguments, gossip, karaoke, singers, video game at dawn. The Crew Bar is all this and more, just being on board to know what it is.
  • Crew BeachAhhh our beach! The Crew Beach is the beach of the crew. Are two "jacuzzi" usually, sometimes hot sometimes frozen. Many crew members have the habit of using the beach crew, is to take a sun, to see the sea and rest or to see the dancers picking a color. She always auction in days at sea, and the crossing is more than crowded, since we are getting in our tropical country. Some people do evening party, paints and edge in the area that the bridge personnel can not see or even getting a security. If the crew spoke beach, many people do not shipped more (connoisseurs understand).
  • Crew PartyBrace yourselves! Because when it comes Crew Party, the beast catches. Crew Party is everything that happens in the crew bar and MUCH more. Each cruise has at least one to claim the life of a crewmember suffered. When the cruise is large and has switching times (time zone), can roll up to three parties in it. That's to kill the crew. Most parties're always crowded, the name changes every party, but the music is basically the same. No matter, the fun is always different, always do something different and that's another thing that just being on board to know how it is. Sometimes they organize in Back Pool, which is much more open and everyone wants to go. Most of the crew parties, that ends also have after which goes to a galley Smoking Point or place the crew parties, which are other follies aside.
  • Crew PassIt's your identity. Your document for all times, it is with him that vc will identify if something happens off the ship, since the passport is always with them. It is he who ensures the entry and departure of the vessel. In it, the company offers an amount for which you can spend on the ship, which can be $ 100 or € 100, depends on the cia, salary or whatever you choose. If this money runs out before recharge, you can put more going to the Crew Purser or Cashier Crew. Try not to miss this card or not lend to anyone, has very bastard who takes advantage of the carelessness to buy things in your Crew Pass, and the Crew Purser fills the bag when you go ask for another.
  • Crew PurserHe is the person responsible for solving the issues of the crew, from embarkation / disembarkation to solve the doubts that the crew may have. It is the person who will make your crew pass, take care of transfers, and other issues that you will know that the responsibility of the Purser.
  • Day OffNormally this is legend. Hardly took a day off depending on the position to roll, but most never takes what they give are a few hours off. They give you a bigger break you taking a few working hours, so you have time to go on a tour, visiting somewhere far away from the ship, like Rome, the Acropolis. In the restaurant they usually give off lunch, which can give a big break.
  • Do not like go homeSimple, do not like go home! This is what will tell you when you are unhappy with something. When you spend some duty you do not like, and you complain, that's what you will hear. Some FDP will irritate you, try to get you out of serious, and that's what will tell you, after all, if aggression is landing. That is, you will always hear this, because if you do not like? 're Unhappy? Go home!
  • DrillThis is complicated. It is important, but no crew likes to do, for the most part you end up picking some of our precious time, rest or leave. The drill is the emergence of simulation done with passengers when they board, and each crew has a position within the ship in an emergency to guide the passengers. The worst is the drill only to crew members, it may take a long time, and is usually done at ports you want to go out much. This has simulation of various things, they come down the life boats in the water and everything. Therefore, this drill takes a long time, and it was worse for me when I arrived in Costa Serena, put me on the fire team, face I saw that tava fucked, but I managed to change.
  • GangwayIt has a mix of emotions and different stories. It is the first place you step when you enter the ship and the last when landed. Output port and entry to several towns and amazing places. Where parting from friends and "loves" on board. Each has a story to tell on the gangway.
  • Hard TimeI hope that does not happen to you, but the board, as in any other job, have a lot of people FDP, but the board is more visible. And usually these people do everything they can to give you hard team, always somehow trying to disrupt your work, if a supervisor, giving you more work, extending their time or always leaving you in worse function. You will realize when you're trying to give you hard team.
  • Home PortIt is the main port of the ship on the continent that are making the season. This is where supply most things, board most of the crew and largely where embark entire batch of passengers. Typically, a cruise begins and ends at this home port.
  • KawanIt's how the Indonesians call someone's friend, brother, bro. Usually they talk "apakabar Kawan?" Which means "How are you, friend?" in Indonesian. Over time, you will learn a thousand words of every nationality.
  • KuyaAnd this is the way the Asians use to call brother, brother, bro. It was never quite clear whether something is Indonesian or PH, because I always saw them talking, even if PH to Indonesian or vice versa.
  • Lunch OffThis is also best known of the restaurant staff. Most people work during lunch because it is one of the peaks of the day on the cruise. So to compensate for several hours worked, supervisors try to take a lunch off, so you can get out or sit for longer hours. If not, ask! They will give, but some wind as they can. And if they are not to your face, the chance to take a lunch off drops dramatically.
  • MafiaIt's one way to make your life on board a little better, or less complicated. Mafia do is to change something you have for something you want. I made a post telling more about the mafias.
  • MafrendIt's the way they use to say "My friend". Everything will always be cut, so get used up.
  • Magazzinero or MagazzinoMay be the responsible person or place. It is usually who supplies the department with the materials necessary to maintain order, cleanliness and operation. The "storage" where you store things can also be called by the same name.
  • Main LineIt is the main line of the buffet. Along with pizza become the largest areas of distribution of food from the buffet, each on one end, of course. The main line most often give much brata because almost always have food there, and always has pax wanting to eat.
  • MamagaioAhhhhh, that everyone knows or has done. Mamagaiar is the art of curling, do nothing, give Migue, pretend to work and etc. They will always use that word to a lot, everyone ends up turning mamagaio at the end. Some people's Profession in mamagaiar, sleeping in the bathroom for a while, going to sleep in the cabin in working hours, resting stay in the Crew Area are just some of mamagaiadas.
  • Medical OffIf you can, flee this (unless it is a lie). Take off the medical board is complicated. Sometimes you have to take a few days rest. But when you really have something, it's problem. Anyway, the medical off is the period that you stay at home for being sick, in pain or with a more serious problem. It's like you're certificate on land.
  • Meeting PointIt is the meeting place, and this for various things. But what use is more about our meeting point in case of emergency. You should decorate your meeting point to have no problems, and if you drill surprise, not take warning hanging out. The staff of the Tour, uses the word to tell passengers where will the tour. Anyway, meeting point is meeting the same point.
  • MessThey are the places where the crew have their meals. Every "division" of the crew has its own mess. There are the Crew Mess, Mess Staff and Officer Mess. And each knows where to eat. The food Staff and Crew Mess SO does not change, but it has a galley which lies to attend either. I did not eat much in the Crew Mess, it was the food of the passenger restaurant, which was much better.
  • MopA mop is used to clean the floor. It is usually used for positions whose function is to clean your area, or an entire space station.
  • NametagA part of your body, the nametag is the identification we use chest. It is mandatory to use it in all areas of the ship, even in the areas of crew. He has your name, title and country of origin with the flag of the country. It's good to always have more than one, so keep a good relationship with the Store / Uniform Keeper. I had one with the name I chose, different flag (to play) and had a named Bruno Mars, which was how everyone called me on board.
  • In interésThis is obvious for us as it comes from the Spanish, but all use. If someone comes to you fill the bag or to guess, sends a "no interés" it will wither. They do the same when you give an opinion. After a while, you'll end up using it for many other things.
  • OutsideIt would be "out there" "outside" and the ship they use correctly. But when want to ask something, do not do the whole question "Will you go outside today?" or "Are you going outside?". They just talk "outside?" and ready. Of course at first you do not understand, but it will get used, because they always do it with words.
  • OvernightAhhhh the overnights! The Crew freak out ... Those are the best. One of the best things in life on board is able to spend the night in the cities, and it is for that that there are overnights. Usually it does not happen so many, so when it happens everyone goes to the city enjoy the night and have fun. Some saw the night and return in the afternoon the next day. When I say "everyone", I mean the crew because pax never want to leave the ship on overnight because it does not want to spend so are giving brata on board, preventing us from leaving early. Overnight stories are the best, always do something different. Soon I'll post on overnights Lisbon, Ibiza, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.
  • PaisanoIt's like they call someone of the same nationality. All Brazilians are my countrymen. If they are to your face, will they call countryman too, even if you are not PH or Indonesian, in which case they abbreviate and call you "paisa".
  • PaxIt is the form used to speak "passengers". This is not only on board, but there you'll hear enough. "3,000 pax boarded" or "There's a pax boring as hell" and so on.
  • PHIt's the way we used to talk about the Filipinos, that way they do not realize as much, because if you use the word "Filipino" they will understand, it is the same in Tagalog.
  • Port ManningThat no one likes! The port manning, was created because of the maritime laws, which require that you have a percentage of the crew aboard the vessel when it is moored in a harbor, for security reasons. To control this, the company (in the case of Costa Cruises) divides the crew in letters, in this case, the word COAST. So each letter is equivalent to a day of the cruise, always returning to the "C", these should be on board and this is set a few months earlier. It can change depending on your dept and function in another post I will speak it.
  • Restaurant Station / StationIt is the workstation of the waiters and assistants. Each station has a number of passengers, usually 18 people. The number may vary from one cross to another.
  • SabonetaEveryone has made a saboneta! Despite apply more to the people who clean something on the ship, saboneta is classic. Normally use to tell that something was poorly done, poorly cleaned or poorly finished. Snack Steward is saboneta cleaning stations, Cleaner makes saboneta master in bathrooms and public areas, cook does that saboneta rice, Bartender blow a Long Island Ice Tea and saboneta. In the end, everything turns saboneta even couple complaining that the partner does saboneta sex.
  • Safety ShoesAre those beautiful boots that we have to use during working hours. Shoes are provided by compulsory use of company because if something happens to you, and you are not using safety shoes, the CIA can not cover the medical costs and damages, claiming that it was negligence of the crew. It's big, it's ugly and it's not always so sure, but use them.
  • Safety TrainingAre the training we have so stepped on the ship. First day is so much information, you can not absorb almost anything, but it's nice to watch these training because it always has a taste and depending on the officer, if you fail it will not help you. And another that one day you might need the tips to help someone or survival.
  • SalettaIt is what we call the cafeterias of the crew, who are also called "mess". Saletta is much used by the Asians, Hispanics and Italians, and then of course, the Brazilians enter the play.
  • Shuttle BusIt is the bus that transports people from the ship to the exit of the harbor or to the city center, some known location etc. In most ports around the world there is this service, which is charged to passengers, but completely free to the crew.
  • Sign OffAsk to quit! Ask sign off, is resigning. When you ask sign off, lose the right to receive the months worked and were discounted a small amount, it is how on earth. So have the option of asking to notice. You will receive everything worked in previous months and will come out with a better image in the company, if you want to return one day.
  • Smoking PointSmoker or not, I will always stop there! This is the area reserved for smokers crew members in an open deck of the ship. The point tuxedo always ends up turning point after the crew bar, a Crew Party, or even on a normal day. To see the sea, take a breja outdoors, exchange ideas or even smoking, the smoking point will always have someone. And because, on some ships near the Disco, there always appear passengers or crew coming into the disc.
  • Staff CaptainIt's the guy who solves problems for crew. If anything get to him, it is bullshit! He is also the one who authorizes parties and other events for the crew, change of Port Manning or emergency function, is also with him. I had sometimes in his office, and tell more now on each case separately.
  • STCW - Standards of Training, Cerification & WatchkeepingCBSN (Basic Course Ship Safety). It is the required course, required for all who want to work at sea. It is usually done on the ground before boarding, with theoretical and practical parts (pool or ocean) and is available a certificate, which must be shown when boarding. Without it, you do not embark! And even if it is already on board, back home.
  • TagalogIt is the language spoken in the Philippines. Depending on the company, you will hear Tagalog all the time and will to learn the words and numbers. Be careful when speaking of them, a lot is similar to the Spanish, and they can understand what we say.
  • Taka TakaI've met many people who like a taka taka, but the board is too much! This term is used when someone talks too much, or when two or more people are talking long and hard, and while working. So I always say "Andiamo, stop taka taka" or "Too much taka taka".
  • TransferAlso used in Portuguese nowadays, means transfer exchange. And in this case it is when the crew member is transferred from one vessel to another.
  • WarningWho never? Every crew member may have taken a warning, after all, are human beings and we bullshit. Warning is a warning that the crew takes for committing such an "offense", depending on the Company, there is a limit warnings that each crew member can take. Typically, this limit is five, of which three are for the same reason, the crew may be landed. The reasons are several to win one, and sometimes we need to break the rules to live a little, and hold the scolding later. Learn the warning may affect your final assessment and a possible promotion.
