11 crew members and 60 passengers ill on HAL MS Maasdman

Holland America  cruise ship MS Maasdman, returned today to Port Everglades after 60 passengers and 11 crew members experienced vomiting and diarrhea during the cruise. Ellen Kennedy, a port spokesman, located in Broward County, north of Miami, told local Channel 10 that the cruise decided to return after a number of passengers and crew showed symptoms of gastrointestinal illness caused by Norovirus.

"A small number of guests had to go to the hospital for treatment of a gastrointestinal ilness," said a spokesman for Holland America, based in Seattle.

The ship set sail with 1,138 passengers and 579 crew members on board for a 14-day cruise through the Caribbean.

 

The liner will undergo a decontamination process and set sail again this afternoon on a 15 day trip to Montreal.
