8 Injured after crane falls on Oasis of the Seas

A large construction crane collapsed today on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Oasis of the Seas during the dry dock refurbishment at the Grand Bahamas Shipyard. Eight people are reported injured in the incident, company officials said.

“We are responding to a construction site incident at the Great Bahamas Shipyard, where Oasis of the Seas is currently in dry dock.”

“As of 1:45 pm EDT, we are accounting for the whereabouts of all site personnel and working with local authorities to determine if there have been any injuries. We are aware of damage to the dock structure and to construction cranes. We are assessing damage to the ship.” said Royal Caribbean spokesperson for Local 10.

Bahamas Press posted a video from the incident in which a shipyard worker on the site mentioned that Dock 2 is gone and that this is “big disaster.” The officials didn’t say if the injured are crew members or construction workers.

In a statement for News 6, Royal Caribbean officials said Grand Bahamas Shipyard management notified them that eight people were injured in the incident. None of their injuries were considered to be life-threatening.

We hope that nobody is hurt too seriously and that all injured recover quickly. Thinking of all of you, our Royal Caribbean friends out there.
