Crystal has announced a leadership change on the bridge of Crystal Serenity, with veteran Captain Placido Libro taking command of the luxury cruise ship beginning August 14, 2026.

Captain Libro succeeds Captain Birger J. Vorland, who recently retired after a maritime career spanning nearly 50 years.

With more than 40 years of experience at sea, Captain Libro joined Crystal in 2024 as Director of Maritime Affairs, where he has been involved in fleet operations and the development of Crystal Grace, the company's first new ocean cruise ship in more than 25 years.

Crystal also confirmed that Captain Libro will take command of Crystal Grace when the ship enters service in 2028, leading the vessel through the final stages of construction and into its inaugural season.

"Captain Libro's depth of experience, unwavering commitment to safety and operational excellence, and passion for delivering exceptional guest experiences make him the ideal leader," said Roberto Fazi, Crystal's Senior Vice President of Marine Operations. Fazi, who has worked with Libro for two decades, praised his leadership and dedication to both guests and crew.

Captain Libro graduated from the Nautical Institute of Messina in Sicily in 1983 before beginning his career in the Italian Navy, where he served as an officer and reached the rank of lieutenant. After leaving the navy, he built an extensive career in the commercial maritime sector, earning his Master's License in 1989.

Over the years, he has held senior positions with several cruise and ferry operators, including Costa Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises. His experience also includes overseeing the construction of around 10 passenger ships at major European shipyards and serving as a Designated Person Ashore (DPA) for a ferry operator.

Speaking about his new role, Captain Libro said it is a privilege to take command of Crystal Serenity and work alongside the ship's officers and crew to continue delivering the high level of service the brand is known for. He also said he looks forward to continuing his involvement with Crystal Grace and eventually bringing the new ship into service in 2028.
