Carnival Cruise Line is testing a new underwater robotic cleaning system aboard Carnival Pride, becoming the first ship in the fleet to use the technology as part of the company's efforts to improve efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.
Developed by marine coatings and hull performance specialist Jotun, the Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) system features the HullSkater, a remotely operated robot that lives onboard the ship. It is deployed underwater to inspect and clean the hull, removing marine growth before it has a chance to build up.
Unlike traditional hull cleaning, which is typically done after fouling becomes more severe, the HullSkater allows for regular maintenance while the ship remains in service. Using cameras and sensors, the robot scans the hull below the waterline and cleans it when needed.
Carnival says keeping the hull clean helps ships move through the water more efficiently. Marine growth can increase drag, forcing engines to work harder and burn more fuel. Since propulsion accounts for most of a cruise ship's energy use, reducing that resistance can also help lower emissions.
The pilot program aboard Carnival Pride will allow the cruise line to gather operational data and evaluate how the technology performs in day-to-day service before deciding whether it could be introduced across more ships in the fleet.
Jotun said the partnership reflects Carnival's willingness to explore innovative solutions that improve ship performance while supporting long-term sustainability goals.
