After undergoing a major refurbishment in Northern Ireland, the Margaritaville at Sea Islander, the second ship to join the Margaritaville at Sea fleet, entered service in mid-June this year. While passengers enjoy the relaxed, tropical Jimmy Buffett-inspired atmosphere, little is known about life below deck for the crew. To provide insight into the ship's work conditions and crew life, we spoke with two crew members who shared their experiences aboard the Islander.
Living Conditions and Facilities
Both crew members praised the overall living conditions, noting that the ship, despite being 24 years old, is well-maintained and thoughtfully refurbished. Crew Member 1 described the cabins as "normal-sized and decent," adding that, while the ship's age means there's "always something broken," it’s all part of the experience on an older vessel. Crew Member 2, shared that the cabins required significant attention, but through the efforts of the team, the conditions have improved substantially.
Over the past two months, there has been a significant improvement in the maintenance of cabins and hotel areas aboard Margaritaville at Sea Islander. Crew members report that any issues they encounter are promptly addressed, often resolved on the same day they are reported.
As for other facilities, the gym is reportedly small, and the open deck is described as "nothing special." However, Crew Member 1 emphasized that "many crew activities, parties, and appreciation events" are organized on every cruise. Margaritaville at Sea values crew morale, regularly hosting celebrations like Independence Day BBQs, bingo nights, and other festive events. The friendlines among the crew is noteworthy, with Crew Member 2 expressing that the level of friendliness and teamwork is something they haven’t experienced on other cruise lines.
Uniforms and Internet Access
Both crew members confirmed that uniforms are provided free of charge, which is a relief for many working on board. Internet access is currently a point of contention. Crew Member 1 mentioned that the internet service might change to a pre-purchased plan in the future, though nothing has been confirmed yet. Crew Member 2, added that in near future the internet speed will be significantly boosted for a better online experience for the crew.
Sports and Nationalities
Sports tournaments are a regular feature for the crew, offering much-needed downtime and a chance to bond with colleagues. The crew is composed primarily of individuals from Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and the Balkan counties. While Crew Member 2 noted that many of the senior officers, including the captain, have experience with majour cruise lines like Celebrity and Royal Caribbean.
Leadership and Future Prospects
Currently, the ship's captain is the well-regarded Athanasios Peppas from Greece, who has garnered respect for his leadership style. Many of the senior officers on the Islander have backgrounds with Celebrity Cruises, which Crew Member 2 pointed out as a mark of their experience and competence.
The crew is optimistic about the future of Margaritaville at Sea. Crew Member 1 noted that while the company is still in its "baby shoes," it’s backed by Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm that owns 51% of the company. Sycamore Partners also acquired Azamara Cruises in 2021, and there are plans to expand the Margaritaville at Sea fleet, with a third ship likely joining soon. Crew Member 1 mentioned that the company already has plans to refurbish another ship, set to enter the fleet next year.
What the Crew Loves and What Could Improve
Both crew members expressed their appreciation for the relaxed and fun environment on board, which they agreed sets Margaritaville at Sea apart from other cruise lines. Crew Member 2, in particular, emphasized how much the crew enjoys working in this laid-back atmosphere, stating,
"You can’t compare it with any other company. The crew is having fun here."
However, improvements are still needed, particularly in terms of crew food. While the living conditions and activities are praised, Crew Member 2 noted that "crew food is a big discussion—it needs improvement, but I hope they will do something about it soon."
Overall, both crew members are optimistic about Margaritaville at Sea's future. With the continued backing of Sycamore Partners and a solid foundation of crew engagement and leadership, they believe the company will grow and succeed for years to come. As Crew Member 2 summed up,
