Cruise Ship Denied Port Entry in Tangier Due to Increase of Covid-19 Cases

The Moroccan authorities prevented the cruise ship Main Schiff Herz, from docking at the port of Tangier, due to increase in Covid-19 cases among passengers on board. The Main Schiff Herz departed on June 3, from Malaga, Spain on a 7-night Mediterranean voyage and was scheduled to visit Tangier on June 7, when about 26 passengers tested positive for Covid-19, local media report. The ship is carrying 1,785 guests, most of them Germans, including 640 crew.

The same sources indicated that the decision to ban the ship was taken after Mein Schiff Herz approached two miles off the Moroccan territorial waters, and based on a report the health authorities decided to deny port entry, due to an increase in cases of coronavirus among the passengers.

The German cruise ship was scheduled to dock for the first time in Tangiers, on Tuesday, as all measures were taken by the city's port authorities to receive tourists, most of them from Germany. The cancellation of this call has disappointed a large part of the professionals in the tourism sector in Tangier, who were counting on a large number of tourists to compensate for the heavy losses they have suffered in the last two years due to the pandemic.
