Cruise ship hits iceberg in Antarctica

A cruise with about 70 people on board ran aground while sailing on the ice near Antarctica, according to the Australian Maritime Authority. The ship takes 50 tourists, explorers and scientists and 20 crew. According to the agency, there is no immediate risk to passengers, the Australian Associated Press reported. The Australian Maritime Authority said the cruise is 100 nautical miles - just over 180 km - a French base in the southern Indian Ocean in a very remote location in Australia, the closest territory outside of Antarctica. Three icebreakers are being sent to the region, but they should take up to three days to reach the site. According to the operator of the ship, passengers and crew are well and enjoyed Christmas.
