Cruise ship stranded in Venice Lagoon after fire breaks out in the engine room

A cruise ship with 1,672 passengers  and 603 crew on board has been stranded since early Tuesday in the Venice Lagoon after a fire broke out in the engine room.

The fire on the Zenith - owned by the company Pullmantur, a subsidiary of the Royal Caribbean International - has been put out and no passenger or crew member was injured, according to Italian media.

The fire in the engine room has been controlled by the crew on board and has caused the cruise ship  to get stuck in the Adriatic Sea about 16 miles from Puerto Levante and Chioggia with the engines off due to failure in the propulsion system.

The passengers were taken to the upper deck of the ship. In a statement, the owner of the cruise has reported that has launched a plan to move passengers to Spain, comprising Pullmantur Air aircraft, and has guaranteed a full refund of the trip.

It is expected that Zenith, who was remodeled in 2006 after was transferred from Celebrity Cruises, will be towed to the port of Venice.
