Cruse Ship MS Amsterdam Tender Boat Hits Reef

Holland America Line tender boat got stuck on a reef while transporting guests from MS Amsterdam to the shore. The cruise ship was anchored in Rarotonga, Cook Islands yesterday afternoon while one of the lifeboats used as a tender boat run into problems. The tender boat number 9 was carrying 90 passengers when a wave pushed the boat towards the reef. Once the boat was stuck waves pushed the boat further to the reef.

MS Amsterdam captain send second lifeboat to try to free the stuck lifeboat, however this plan was not successful because the tender was too heavy to be towed.

“The crew asked if people could possibly leave the tender and swim to shore to make it lighter to pull it off, but the boat still didn’t seem to be moving.” said one of the passengers in the tender Bill Murphy.

Ships officers and crew came out to bring water to the guests stuck on the tender and helped in offloading some of them on the reef so they can walk to the shore.

Finally after 3 hours a tugboat was called to free the tender boat off the reef. There are no reported injuries to guest or crew during this incident and all scheduled tours had been cancelled.
